TIL apparently some places let you vote about your job. Must be a union thing?

Yes...all contractual changes are supposed to be voted on by the general membership. The above is a contractual change. Changes to the lines of progression are part of the labor contract.

When you bid into a department, there is a logical progression of duties as you gain seniority, with the increased responsibility comes increased pay, etc. They are realigning the lines of progression, removing a job that I am presently doing and moving it alongside of the line of progression that includes the production line I came from. With that, it will allow me to choose whether or not I want to continue operating the rewinders, my seniority will allow me to go back to the roll wrap/processing area where I came from.

I came up with my own way of coping...going back to the area I started working in in roll processing and staying there till the towmotor job in the line of progression I started in comes open above me and getting off of the rewinder. Since it'll now be my right to do so.

But what bothers me is that there are senior people who will be allowed to say that they do not want to move up and stay on a lower paying job forever and force junior people up the line. Which totally defeats the line of progression...which is part of the contract and is being changed illegally, without a vote by the general membership.

I get why you're pissed then. While not a union fan you are paying for that privilege. It should be followed. I would tear into your rep.

I know, they wanted "freezing" to be part of it, but the company will not allow local 5 to have the option of the freeze if we do.

I don't know what will happen on your end of the mill if and when this comes about.

I did Dave...and I got told to sit down, shut up and take it.

I know...anyway, if this shit goes through, they'll have to let you stay on assistant and not operate. I think anyway. Since that's how this'll work on my end.

Wish I could...you either pay union dues or an administration fee which is the same amount as union dues since you're getting the collective bargaining benefits of the union. So, you may as well keep the membership.

It didn't bother me quite so much when I was involved because I knew I had the power to take care of things myself and did take care of things myself...now it's a different story because I don't have that power any longer.

I know what I would do in certain situations as a union officer and usually what I would do would get things done and taken care of, someone got screwed out of pay, we'd make some threats to get the pay issue resolved and the company would pay the person, etc. The problem is, you ask these assholes to do something like that, they don't do it because they're afraid to piss off the company and if what you're asking for does not benefit these people, they won't do it.

The company was the last thing I was afraid of, these guys are running fucking scared all the time and don't give a shit unless they get something out of it.

So, now it's time to file NLRB charges of unfair representation.

I buy sell and fix small engines.
SOme examples of emails I get.

'I have a handmower that appears to be low in compression how many psi should it have and where are you located and what do you think is wrong with it?'
Yeah because i can totally tell you whats wrong with it without knowing ANY INFORMATION ABOUT IT. I can only give you a rough range of psi (40-90). For all i know you're operating it near a smoke machine.

then you get the Minimalists.

'HOW MUCH FOR A LAWNMOWER AND CHAINSAW?'

Uh, for what service, or what are they, what do they look like do they run, etc in terms of me buying them.

Then you get the people who can't spell.

'Halllo so dou thank yiud want tuos engines and i git lieke fo4ur poucket bike engines sont noho whats wrong with them tgo kk'

I just responded with, Could you rephrase that?

Oh and the people who schedule a time to drop something off and never show up? Fuck you.

So this food stamp whore comes in with her son, can't speak a single word of English, the son is 10 and translating for her/me. Anyway they want balloons so we figure out the colors and such. I've never filled balloons before so I'm not sure how exactly its done - although its not rocket science.

So I'm working as fast as I can, took me maybe 5-8 minutes. too fill 10 balloons, which I felt was pretty good considering its a complete pain in the ass! Then as I'm filling them the bitch has her son tell me "if you can hurry up!" Like seriously fuck you! This is all while the mother is screaming at welfare baby #2 in a foreign language, making the situation even more stressful. I seriously wanted to murder them all with a machete.

Dickheads who get in the way when you`re trying to do your job and wind up screwing you up so badly you have to redo the entire job.

Today, was at a building and we were testing the emergency lights. Part of the test involved taking a reading from the battery, unplugging the power units, making sure the lights go on and then leaving it alone for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, go around, see if the lights are still bright, take a second reading and then plug in the power units and take another reading. The readings basically let you know if the batteries are fine or if they need to be replaced.

Went well up to the `go around and see if the lights are still bright.` part. Turned out, some moron from the building went around and plugged them back in so basically, the test was invalid. Thanks moron!

Another one is management who don`t give out the notices of the alarm testing or in-suite testing. Not to mention failing to show up to escort the tech in the units. So, no access to most of the suites and a whole shit load of people freaking out on us because the alarms are going off. Again, testing has to be rescheduled for another day.

Makes me feel good when I think of the look on the manager`s face when he or she finds out that we are billing extra for the second visit.

New record for being kept after hours so the general manager can get wasted with his friends. Should've left at 12:30am, didn't leave until 1:45. The fucker also illegally parked in a handicapped spot tonight and when the cops showed up he just laughed at them because the signs haven't been put back up, yet - then had the only extra hand working go move his car so he could keep bowling in his league.

Tomorrow I will be drafting an email to our dir. of operations. Fuck this shit.

So I had an awesome job for a company that deals in disaster relief (think ServPro). I was working in their supply depot. Well, rather than TRAIN employees how to properly use equipment, our company just goes "Meh, so what? $25k piece of machinery, who needs to know how that operates?" So last month, they bounce me out of my awesome job there to their document dept and hire in someone who can work on said fucked-up machinery. I wish them well.

I literally got half an hour notice on a Friday this was going to happen. Much stuff got glossed over, such as "You are going to lose your benefits" and "They don't pay holidays over there" and "We're going to promise you a $1/hr raise to make up for losing your paid vacation, but actually, we didn't approve that with Payroll." And I was told "Oh, travel in that department is rare. If they do, it's optional, and it's usually just to drop off or pick up documents. 3 days max."

One week into my new department, I get told they need me to go to New York for "about 7-10 days". An hour later, that estimate jumped to "10-16 days, possibly more". I told them "Can't do, I have a tax audit meeting to go to". They relent but give me a spiel about how "well if you can't travel, we'll have to let you go". Asking around, suddenly no one remembers telling me that travel was an optional thing.

They tried again to send me out of town 2 weeks later... 3 days before my vacation (put in for while I was still at the depot) was to start. Told them again "Not doing it."

The last straw was Monday. I had a 2nd job interview lined up on Tuesday, and they were trying to ONCE AGAIN send me to NY, this time for "possibly 2 months, but at least a month". No chance in hell. When they sent me home to pack, I told them I was going home, but I wasn't returning.

On a positive note, I nailed my 2nd interview with the other job and start on Tuesday.

Management who cannot write a schedule to save their life!

Basically, they're fucking with the hours; trying to run with the bare minimum number of employees possible to save on payroll. For example even if they know it's going to be busy they won't schedule enough help, hoping that maybe it won't be busy and they can save some money. Should it get busy, no biggie, we'll just ask some people to stay and work longer. Problem is these assholes wait until the very last minute to ask! Then they're try to make it seems like they're doing you a favor, extra hours whoooohoooo, more money. Sorry I'm doing you a favor. If I didn't stay and work a few extra hours you'd be screwed.

This week our boss retired, after 45yrs of with the company - not sure how he managed that because ever day here makes me want to kill myself! Long story short the CEO is going to take him out for lunch. A fact management was well aware of the week before (if not two weeks beforehand). Thus had plenty of time to plan/schedule people to work as they wanted the store looking perfect. Plus a few of the other bigwigs were coming to visit our store so they could suck the CEO's cock - hoping for that future promotion.

Anyway, it's a day before the "big visit" and I'm scheduled 5:30am - 11:30am. The office lady comes in at 5:00am and had a whole 6 fucking hours to ask me if I wanted to work some overtime. Does she ask me when I clock in at 5:30am or at 6,7,8,9,10,11:00am FUCK NO! It's 11:20am (10 minutes before my shift ends) and this bitch calls me on the store phone asking, "can you stay and work another 4 hours." Basically this has been happening for the last two months they will ask the last 10-15-20 minutes before your shift ends. So you're thinking fuck yeah I get off in 15 minutes then have to stay and work longer.

This man has some sound advice.

Seriously, if you have plans and THEY can't plan ahead? Tough tatas. It'd be one thing if they came up around 9 or so and asked "Hey, if we need you, can you stay?" But last minute? Yeah, no.

where I work, they cannot force you to stay if you are properly relieved.
Now, if your relief calls off, crews can't move up or they can't find someone to cover the shift you don't want, you're stuck for another 8.
when you're hired, you are very much made aware of that fact and it sucks when it happens, but the money is so hard to walk away from.

Especially when you make 25 bucks an hour...like the job I just got thrown into. Literally. Mostly because they need to train some people on one of the lines. I got one week of training.

I'm only supposed to be a fill in right now, but they can't tell me for how long...could be two weeks, could be six months.
